Women in the Workplace: Through the Years

Women have come a long way in the workplace, but history reminds us they still have a long way to go. In 1970, women represented 37.5% of the total workforce in the United States. During this period, the top ten occupations held by women were administrative, with ‘secretary’ at the top of that list.  Second, came teacher, and third was sales clerk. 

Women in the labor force since 1920 the 10 occupations employing the largest number of women in 1970 and how this number of women in the labor force has increased and what types of professions they have.

The average salary for these particular jobs translates to a whopping $30,072. While improvements have been made, the top three professions women selected in 2019 are teachers, nurses and secretaries, with a median income of $41,977 (U.S. Department of Labour 1970 & 2019). This represents only a $12,000 increase over 47 years. Women are not selecting careers with top salaries or maximizing opportunities to build wealth or create a financial legacy. They are not inclined to launch companies or lead corporations. What other reasons contribute to the career you select?
